Anomaly Scan

This is a detailed scan at 20-24 weeks of pregnancy.

During the scan we examine each part of the fetal body, determine the position of the placenta, assess the amount of amniotic fluid, and measure fetal growth. Special attention is paid to the brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowel, kidneys and limbs.

If any abnormalities are detected the significance of the findings will be discussed and the couple will be given the opportunity to have further counselling with Professor Nicolaides.

Anomaly Scan

An anomaly scan is often referred to as “the twenty-week scan” or “the detailed scan”.  It is normally performed between 21 – 24 weeks gestation as this is the best opportunity during pregnancy to examine all the anatomy of your baby in great detail.   The anatomy or 20-week scan is a transabdominal scan and is a non-invasive procedure.

REASONS TO HAVE THIS SCAN

  • Reassure you that your baby is developing normally.
  • Confirm the gestational age of your pregnancy.
  • Confirm the number of fetuses and, if twins, whether they are identical or not.
  • Detect birth defects, such as spina bifida or heart problems.
  • If you are concerned about the chances of chromosome issues, this scan can search for subtle markers that may suggest a higher risk that your baby may have a syndrome.
  • If you want to know your baby’s gender this can usually be seen at this scan.
  • When you attend for this scan we will tell you about everything that we see, unless you advise us that there are certain things that you don’t want to know about, such as your baby’s gender or markers for chromosome issues.

Anomaly Scan FAQ's

Anomaly Scan or mid-pregnancy scan is an ultrasound scan done between the 18th and 21st week of pregnancy to take a closer look at the baby and the womb (uterus) and to have an idea where the placenta is lying.

The mid-pregnancy anomaly scan is done for checking any physical abnormalities in the growing baby. Although it can’t pick up every problem, it gives the healthcare specialist (a sonographer) an idea about the baby’s bones, heart, brain, spinal cord, face, kidneys and abdomen and allows the healthcare specialist identify the following conditions (some of which are very rare):

A sonographer asks the patient to lie on a couch and uncover the abdomen and applies gel on the abdomen. Then he/she passes a handheld probe over the skin of the abdomen to examine the baby’s body. The gel is applied to make sure that there is good contact between the probe and the skin. As the probe moves, a black and white 2-D image of the baby will appear on the ultrasound screen. For a better view, the sonographer will ask the patient to drink water to have a full bladder before the appointment. At times the sonographer may apply slightly more pressure to get a better view of the baby.
