IUCD CuT Insertion

An intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) is a small device made of plastic, sometimes with added copper or added slow-release progestogen, that is placed into the uterus as an effective method of contraception. The copper-coated IUD prevents pregnancy by not allowing the sperm to fertilize the egg. It may also make it harder for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus. Copper-containing IUCDs (Cu-IUCDs) may be inserted at any time in the menstrual cycle, as long as pregnancy can reasonably be excluded.

Treatment

  • Copper-containing IUCDs (Cu-IUCDs) may be inserted at any time in the menstrual cycle, as long as pregnancy can reasonably be excluded (see ‘Excluding pregnancy’, below). Documenting a negative pregnancy test may be sensible, if possible.
  • The LNG-IUS (Mirena® or Jaydess®) can be fitted at any time in the cycle as long as pregnancy can be reasonably excluded.
  • The IUS is ideally inserted between day 1 and day 7 of the menstrual cycle. If it is fitted at any other time condoms are advised for the first seven days of use.
  • Whilst postpartum contraception is a licensed indication for the Cu-IUCD, pregnancy beyond five days following unprotected sexual intercourse (UPSI) is an absolute contra-indication to the copper device, and any pregnancy is an absolute contra-indication to use of the LNG-IUS.
  • Insertion towards the end of the menstrual period, or just after it, is often more comfortable for the patient.

IUCD CuT Insertion Faq's

Before getting an IUD, a person can speak to their doctor about which type is best for them. IUDs come in two forms:

  • The copper IUD: This version of the device kills sperm, preventing it from fertilizing an egg.
  • The hormonal IUD: This type of device releases progestin, which is very similar to progesterone, a hormone the body manufactures itself.

You will lie on the exam table with your legs up. Your doctor will gently insert a speculum into your vagina to widen it. Using special tools, the doctor will:

  • Check the size and position of your uterus.
  • Clean your cervix and vagina with an antiseptic liquid.
  • Look for any problems with your uterus.
  • Line up your cervix with your uterus.
